Stoptober – It’s Time To Kick The Habit With Our Help

Okay so you’ve tried patches, you’ve tried nicotine gum, you’ve even tried ‘cold-turkey’ - and as you contemplate you’re next venture you have one last cigarette.

quit smoking with purplebox vapoursGood news in a sense - as groups of friends or colleagues can use this month to add a little peer pressure to the goal and urge each other on in the quest to leave dreaded tobacco behind. Although, in effect, any time is a good time to stop smoking.

‘Stoptober’ is upon us once again – the month that lends itself by virtue of pronunciation to putting ‘stop’ as a prefix, and being adopted by anti-smoking campaigners as a date to finally kick the habit.

Many people are in fact successful at quitting – they may chew the dogs rubber toy or suck the babies dummy to take their mind off a cigarette – but in their own home they may just about cope. Normally, as we’re all aware, people tend to turn to comfort food and the weight piles on. Then they have a pre-arranged social event to attend and the first glass of wine, beer or the sight of someone else exhaling smoke with a big smile on their face, sees them tumble head first off the wagon. The attempt gets recorded in the history books under ‘failure’ - and you resign yourself to trying again next year….

Why It’s Tough To Quit

Well, help is at hand. The positive is you’re not addicted to tar or the other carcinogenic compounds found in cigarettes – you are, however, addicted to nicotine and despite the scaremongering, nicotine is not harmful in small vaporised doses. Yes, in large quantities it affects heart rate, and yes, if you drink it you’ll get very sick – it is toxic after all (but so is bleach and do you drink that?).

Smoking is very habitual – you are addicted to:

social vaping with purplebox vapours

  • the ‘hand to mouth’ movement that smoking has developed in you
  • the small feeling of alertness that accompanies a cigarette (but that’s just the nicotine stimulus)
  • the satisfying exhalation of a smoke that seems to relieve stress
  • the social elements of smoking – associating a cigarette with an evening beer, chat with friends, smirting outside the pub

Patches, gums, cold turkey do not solve these testing and will-sapping extracurricular habit-forming side effects.

What anti-smoking campaigners sometimes forget is that despite the cancer risk, the ashtray smell on hair, clothes and breath – people actually enjoy a cigarette for all the reasons just mentioned and stopping, whilst people know morally would be beneficial, – just takes that little bit of fun out of an already stressful life.

The solution: TRY VAPING

Vaping and Electronic Cigarettes in Ireland

Vaping is increasingly eulogised as a way to help reduce or stop the smoking of traditional cigarettes. The number of medical bodies; practitioners; ‘celebrity’ doctors, i.e. Dr. Christian Jesson; anti-smoking organisations; and various medical research facilities that support vaping are swelling in number.

Whilst all these parties, and rightly so, add the caveat that research is on-going into any long-term health effects of inhaling vegetable glycerine (the main component in e-juice) – all are of the opinion that vaping and electronic cigarettes are 99% better than an actual tobacco cigarette.

Professor Robert West, former head of ASH, has warned that:

“If governments do not support vaping then they are condemning millions of people to death who would otherwise live by switching to the electronic alternative.”

As a Health Minister see how that sits on your conscience.

Vaping is successful as a healthier alternative as not only does it administer a nicotine hit but it solves all the other habitual or enjoyment aspects previously discussed. Furthermore, you can actually wean yourself down on nicotine strength until you reach zero per cent if you wish – not possible with real cigarettes. You may even save more than €1500 per year – imagine what you could do with this money!

So embrace this Stoptober and VAPE – it may be you’re best bet so far

The Vaping Effect - Smoking Rates Fall to Lowest Level Ever
The Vaping Effect - Smoking Rates Fall to Lowest Level Ever

by Steve Barrett

‘Smoking rates in England fall to lowest on record’ isn’t much of a headline in itself. Smoking rates have been in long-term decline for decades, so any given year is likely to have the fewest smokers on record.

What Deborah Arnott, of ASH, cannot quite bring herself to say is that it is the e-cigarette, not big government interference, that has been the game-changer. As Public Health England has acknowledged, e-cigarettes are the most popular stop-smoking aid.
