Vaping Virgins - A Beginner’s Guide to the e-Cigarette Revolution

E-cigarettes and vaping is increasingly recognised as one of the best ways to help a smoker quit their tobacco smoking habit. In essence, the devices allow a person to receive a nicotine hit without getting any of the tar and other 4000 plus toxins associated with tobacco smoking.

The best way to start vaping and using e-cigs is to call in to a specialist supplier and get the facts, look at how the kits work and explore the abundance of e-cig liquids on offer.

starter and advanced kitsKey to making the transition to e-cigs permanent is to start on the correct level of nicotine. There is no doubt that nicotine is addictive in its qualities and effects on the body, similar to those experienced when drinking caffeine. However, it is the least offensive chemical in a traditional cigarette. Smokers are not addicted to tobacco or tar – these are simply the vehicles by which nicotine is delivered to the system.

The transition…

E-cigarettes are successful substitutes to tobacco cigarettes as they satisfy all the habitual elements associated with smoking. They relieve the nicotine craving, they allow you to have a device in your hands and you exhale a water vapour. The concept of exhaling a ‘smoke’ is missed when smokers give up with patches, gums or cold turkey. The vapour mimics the exhale of traditional smoke and convinces the brain the experience is very real.

Stick with it…

Many people adopting vaping as an alternative do take to it very easily, however some, especially previously heavy smokers, do find the concept takes some getting used to.

The best advice possible is to stick with it, don’t feel that having the odd cigarette whist attempting to start using e-cigarettes is reason to feel that they don’t work for you.

E-cigarettes can seem daunting to the older smoker, especially the terms thrown around when discussing them or researching online. So here are some basic terms explained:

  • Rechargeable lithium battery: the engine behind the device – the power delivery system for the e-cigarette. A lithium battery that simply screws into a USB charging cable that plugs into your computer or socket (with the correct adapter). The key here is to use the correct charging devices – don’t use an old charger found in the back of a drawer that seems to fit – this will lead to problems.
  • Clearomiser: the e-cig liquid carrier. A plastic or glass receptacle that you fill with e-juice – contains wicks in some form that pass e-liquid over the coil.
  • Atomiser or coil: the heating wire element that heats up when you press the button on the device. Heats the e-liquid immediately to vaporising point and sends the vapour internally to the user.
  • E-cig liquid: the flavoured juice that can contain the nicotine to substitute the stimulus normally derived from a traditional cigarette. Contains 5 ingredients:
    • Vegetable glycerine – makes the liquid into a user-friendly syrupy juice
    • Propylene Glycol – helps the vaporised molecules enter the respiratory system (used in medicinal inhalers for the same effect)
    • Water – dilutes the liquid
    • Food grade flavouring – enjoy trying the huge number of flavours available to make the experience pleasant as your taste buds are revitalised after reducing tobacco smoking
    • Nicotine: available in various strengths to cater for your previous smoking habit (see our blog http://purplebox.ie/blogs/news/14142081-on-the-level-whats-the-right-nicotine-content-for-you )
    • Vape & Vaper – that’s now you – a person on the vaping journey is a vaper. Welcome to the community.

As always, talk to a specialist and you will get these terms full explained and demonstrated in store.

Tips to get the best from your vaping experience…

  • Strength: talk to the experts about finding the right level to get you going and not leave you craving traditional cigarettes
  • Vaping frequency: don’t be afraid to vape more than you previously smoked – it’s a process of experimentation and self-regulation. The lack of toxins means you can vape more to resist any cravings. Many vapers choose flavours that suit their ‘all day vaping’ routine for this reason.
  • Upgrade: as you get used to the concept additional features such as ‘variable voltage’ allow users to increase the power passing through the device to augment throat hit and amount of vapour produced even when reducing the nicotine strength. Getting a brief guide to voltage and wattage output from your specialist will clarify these elements.
  • Remember the savings: switching to vaping will save you money as once you have a kit buying e-liquid is very cost effective. A previous heavy smoker can save over €1500 per year by vaping.

Smoking is vilified in society, and rightly so as it is a killer habit. However, many associate their cigarette with a pleasant experience: relaxing with friends, with a social drink, relieving stress – these are valid reasons for people enjoying the stimulus effect – but there is now a healthier alterative to the toxic element of traditional smoking.

The Vaping Effect - Smoking Rates Fall to Lowest Level Ever

by Steve Barrett

‘Smoking rates in England fall to lowest on record’ isn’t much of a headline in itself. Smoking rates have been in long-term decline for decades, so any given year is likely to have the fewest smokers on record.

What Deborah Arnott, of ASH, cannot quite bring herself to say is that it is the e-cigarette, not big government interference, that has been the game-changer. As Public Health England has acknowledged, e-cigarettes are the most popular stop-smoking aid.
